In response to national endorsements to enact measures to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and improve indoor air quality across high-traffic facilities including school buildings, Kinnelon High School utilized their ESSER II funding to implement automated disinfection via hybrid germicidal fixtures.  Pure Lighting Company provided engineered design to ensure proper coverage to help KHS’s students and staff remain safe through the pandemic, reduce risk of future pathogen transmission, and enhance current performance & well-being via indoor air quality improvements.

Challenges

  1. Client’s investment would need to provide immediate protection against SARS-CoV-2 pandemic as well as future-ready improvements to indoor air quality.
  2. System should be simple and affordable to install with existing electrical distribution.
  3. Disinfection technology should provide safe and effective treatment in occupied spaces.
  4. Surfaces should be treated periodically to maximize mitigation of pathogen transmission.

The Solution:

Hybrid germicidal lighting fixtures were specified in Kinnelon High School shared spaces including classrooms, computer labs, and cafeterias.  Pure Lighting provided an engineered design to ensure significant air exchanges and whole-room UVC light distribution.  Fixtures were installed using existing electrical infrastructure saving labor costs and time.

Protection against SARS-CoV-2 and other communicable pathogens as well as improvements to indoor air quality are achieved via combination of air purification and whole-room direct UVC treatments.  Tri-layer air-defense technology combines HEPA, high-intensity UVC, and Active Carbon filtration with ASHRAE recommended 2+ air exchanges per hour in order to provide substantial reduction of airborne pathogens, pollutants, irritants, VOCs, and harmful gases like ozone and CO2.  Scheduled whole-room direct UVC treatments are run nightly from 2:30 – 2:55 AM to provide up to 99.999% disinfection of surface-level and airborne pathogens.

Kinnelon High School’s usage of ESSER II funding provided long-term solutions to mitigate spread of pathogens and harm incurred from pollutants & irritants, as well as immediate improvements to staff and student well-being and performance.
