When conducting upgrades, renovations, and new additions, school officials have many factors to consider including pricing, longevity, maintenance, investment trade-offs, and more. However, lighting should not be relegated to a commodity, but rather an integral component of school facility upgrades. Lighting systems can positively affect the quality-of-life of occupants, provide additional usages of facilities (and possibly add extra revenue streams), be utilized as modern STEAM learning opportunities, and even improve indoor air quality.

In this presentation, Dan Litvin of Pure Lighting Company, a lighting design firm specializing in school systems, will provide an overview of considerations, requirements, limitations, technologies, and possibilities of school-specific lighting. This is a survey course that will provide a top-level look at the following topics:

  • LED Lighting
  • Architectural Lighting
  • UVC Disinfection
  • Stage and TV Broadcasting
  • Emerging Trends
  • Live Q+A

“You have to find what sparks a light in you so that you in your own way can illuminate the world” – Oprah Winfrey

Today’s educational system increasingly values STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, Math) learning objectives and outcomes. Out of all spaces common to school facilities, the theater may be the best for incorporating opportunities not only in the Arts, but in technology, science, and engineering. As such, providing students access to modern theatrical systems is of critical importance to ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.

In this webinar, we will dive into basic aesthetic, functional, engineering, and financial considerations when designing stage systems for schools. Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to, (1) the different needs of elementary, middle, and high schools, (2) the minimum-required lighting & controls for an ‘adequate’ system to options to transform a school theater into a modern Performing Arts Center, (3) new and emerging technologies in stage lighting and controls, (4) how to maximize usage of an auditorium through house-lighting and ensuring multi-functionality, and (5) live Q+A.

It goes without saying that the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-2021 has been a paradigm-shifting event across many fields. The increased emphasis on improving indoor air quality and overall protection against pathogens in high traffic facilities is especially important to a hard-hit theatrical industry. Fortunately, science-based technologies provide invaluable tools to enhance the safe reopening of theaters.

In this session, you will learn about various technologies that are being used to improve air quality, their safety and tradeoffs, and best practices for implementing in theaters. Of special note are ensuring these technologies do not (or minimally) impact performances via appearance or sound. The session is meant for professionals that manage theater facilities, architects and engineers, and those seeking solutions to pressing modern problems.

Lighting controls are moving away from expensive, complicated, and limited systems requiring controls wiring, processors, and complicated IT programming. New wireless controls provide simplicity and flexibility that can maximize the functionality of a facility’s lighting system while providing high-end functionality to facility occupants and management.

In this class, we will review the latest in wireless lighting controls and their many applications in architectural and functional lighting systems. While our approach will focus on applications, we will review some of the basic technical requirements to ensure proper power distribution and signal connectivity throughout a facility.
