Puretek Group had the privilege of collaborating with the iconic Alvin Ailey Dance Studio to enhance their lobby space with an awe-inspiring color-changing lights setup. The project aimed to create a captivating atmosphere that would leave a lasting impression on visitors and patrons from the moment they stepped into the studio.

The impact was immediate, elevating the overall ambiance of the studio. Visitors were captivated by the interplay of colors, enhancing their anticipation for the incredible artistic brilliance they were about to witness. The color-changing lights not only complemented performances but also became an attraction in themselves, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Challenges

1)  As the home of the world-famous Alvin Ailey Dance Company, the new lighting needed to provide high-quality illumination with professional-grade artistic effects.

2)  The system had to be wireless as running control wiring was not an option.

3)   In order to accommodate a busy and rapidly changing performance schedule as well as special events & holidays, the process of creating new scenes and animations was required to be simple.

The Solution:

Professional-grade Acolyte strip lighting was installed in the two alcoves above the elevators in the main levels of the Alvin Ailey Dance Studio to provide indirect RGBW accent lighting capable of vivid static scenes and dynamic animations. The lighting system was outfitted with a Casambi-enable controls protocol via McWong hardware components. A controls kiosk was installed in the local staff-only security room to provide one-touch access to presets as well as to act as a gateway device to enable the remote creation of scenes, animations, and schedules by PureTek designers. To empower local staff, system training was provided to instruct how to adjust colors, create automated schedules, and create dynamic effects and animations.

Casambi is a world-leading wireless controls protocol designed specifically for lighting purposes by some of the same engineers who developed the Bluetooth protocol. Benefits of this protocol include unparalleled reliability, highly dependable security, and the flexibility to match a lighting designer’s most creative visions.

The RGBW strip lighting is controlled through the free Casambi app (iOS and Android) and provides nuanced control to change the color and intensity of subsections of each run of strip lighting. This access allows for unique static effects or dynamic animations such as strobing, chasing, or smooth transitions. To further simplify operation, robust scheduling is enabled to automatically run a green and red effect during the weeks leading up to Christmas or a very spooky orange every October 31st.

Remote Gateway Access

The Alvin Ailey Dance Studio RGBW strip lighting system is equipped with a gateway – a device that serves as a bridge between local controls and the internet to allow remote system access. System access is exclusive to PureTek team members and is protected by multiple layers of safe encryption.

The gateway provides the two major benefits of unprecedented support and remote programming of scenes, animations, and schedules. Through remote access, the PureTek support team can run regular system health checks to proactively identify issues well before an important show or event, and can even conduct troubleshooting from states away. In addition, the gateway allows the Alvin Ailey Dance Studio to enjoy having a virtual lighting designer who can preload local controls with custom scenes and animations at any time.
