The Science Behind UVC Disinfection
What is UVC Light?
UVC light is a natural and powerful means of disinfecting pathogens and improving air quality while reducing reliance on harsh chemical cleaners. Emanated from the sun and filtered by the atmosphere, the benefits of UVC light are harnessed in facilities through specially designed lighting technologies.
How UVC Disinfects
UVC light penetrates into the RNA and DNA of pathogens and breaks down their genetic information through a process called Thymine Dimertization. With damaged DNA and RNA, the pathogen cannot reproduce and therefore cannot infect.
The action of UVC disinfection is maximized between the wavelengths of 250nm – 270nm. For this reason, most Pure UVC products fall into this bandwidth. Proper UVC dose, duration, and distance is required to ensure pathogens are properly inactivated. Pure UVC systems are engineered to ensure proper dosages are achieved.
Unlike other means of disinfection, UVC light can treat spaces against viruses including SARS-CoV-2 and influenza strains, bacteria such as Streptococcus (Strep Throat), allergy-causing and building-damaging mold spores, and other pathogens without harmful by-products, odors, or vapors.

Safety Information
Extended exposure to UVC light can cause irritation to eyes and skin. All effects are temporary typically alleviating within a few hours with severe cases passing in 24-72 hours. Unlike UVA and UVB light which you are exposed to on a daily basis when you step outside, UVC’s wavelengths are too short to penetrate deeply into the skin or eyes and are therefore not considered to be carcinogenetic.
Pure UVC recommends avoiding direct exposure to UVC light. All of our direct-treatment products contain sensors to keep UVC lights off while occupied spaces. In the off-chance the UVC light is activated:
- Avoid looking directly at the blue light
- Evacuate the premises immediately. If you are unable to evacuate immediately, wave your arms to trigger the sensor off.
- Notify a facility crew member or management

Pure UVC Technology Overview:
Whole-Room/Direct Treatments
Up to 99.99% disinfection of exposed surface-level and airborne pathogens in a matter of minutes. Treatment is achieved by irradiating an entire area with UVC light via ceiling-mounted or portable fixtures. Whole Room UVC disinfection should be performed exclusively in non-occupied spaces. Our Intelli-Safe® control systems include high-end occupancy sensors, scheduling functionality, app-based Bluetooth controls, and other features to maximize system safety and flexibility.
UVC Air Purification
Treatment of airborne pathogens for occupied and non-occupied spaces is achieved via installing UVC lighting into existing ductwork and/or applying specially designed air purifier fixtures with built-in air-exchange systems and UVC lighting. System effectiveness is determined by the frequency of air changes in the treatment area and the level of disinfection in each passthrough. Pure UVC’s air purification fixtures provide multiple levels of purification including HEPA filtration and high-powered UVC lighting to not only disinfect airborne pathogens but to also treat against pollutants, VOCs, and odors.
Upper Air Treatment
A safe means of treating occupied and non-occupied spaces via specially designed UVC fixtures that irradiate above a certain height (traditionally 7’ and higher). Due to natural air flow, fans, and HVAC ventilation, the purified air is circulated throughout spaces. Upper air UVC is the proper solution for large spaces with high ceilings that require disinfection against airborne pathogens during times of non-vacancy.
